BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CARNIVAL OF BROKEN HUMAHUACA

Carnival as celebration reaches American territory in the XV century A.C. by hand of the Spaniards, who already had as part of their traditions and customs. However, they allowed the natives to maintain certain rituals within the celebration.

Currently, the carnivals in Quebrada de Humahuaca combine Spanish customs (such as the use of masks and costumes that maintain equality in the celebration) with rituals linked to the Pachamama. The goal is to honor the deity of Mother Earth

This can also be understood as a short and adapted version of the Inca festival of Kapaj Inti Rami, which used to take place between December and March and in which people drank, sang, ate and danced to a halt.

To summarize, we can say that the Carnival of the Quebrada de Humahuaca is a mixture of indigenous, Spanish and Creole traditions, but as this place is an obligatory step towards Peru and Bolivia, it has assumed -in a certain way- the music and some characteristics of those countries.

    THE CARNESTOLENDA CELEBRATION

The Carnival begins in each community with the unearthing of the devil, which is usually called Coludo or Pujllay and symbolizes the celebration of a mound of stones called Apacheta –represented by a rag doll that was buried at the end of the last carnival-. The repressed desires are released and during the celebration it is allowed to consume alcohol freely since the moral precepts are put aside.

As is typical of this tradition, throughout the carnival there is dance and music performed with native instruments such as erkenchos, anatas, charangos and bombos. The inhabitants who participate in this event dress in colorful costumes, making use of bells and masks to disguise themselves.

Another custom is to soak your face with flour, talcum powder and streamers while basil branches are distributed.

The Quebrada de Humahuaca Carnival lasts eight days. With the sun the comparsas function as invitations, the participants dance carnavalitos through the streets and, at nightfall, they dance in the premises.

After 8 days of celebrations, the carnival closes with the burial of the devil. The activity is carried out with offerings of alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and coca leaves, saying goodbye until the following year.

The largest and most multitudinous festivities take place in the city of Humahuaca, the most important in the Quebrada. Learn more about this wonderful destination and all that it offers by clicking on the link.

Although Jujuy is a province with high average temperatures, there are other factors that make the climate very pleasant to visit this northern province all year round. However, there are very specific times when it comes to tourism. Find out what they are and why, in this article about the best seasons to travel to Jujuy. You can choose between high, medium and low.

HOW TO DETERMINE THE TRAVEL SEASON TO JUJUY?

There are several factors that determine if the season is high, medium or low in Jujuy. Among the main ones, the climate, holidays and school holidays stand out, although the popular festivals of the province also are influential. In fact, in the precise case of this destination, we must consider the Carnival of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, for which Jujuy is in high season

As far as the weather is concerned, the reality is that we can visit Jujuy all year round. Weather conditions allow it. Throughout the year all excursions can be made, however, it is important to bear in mind that the rainy season extends between the months of October and April/May. Find out more details in our article about the climate in Jujuy.

As for holidays, you should know that they are another very important factor when estimating the season. In fact, Jujuy receives many travelers -from different parts of Argentina- who want to make a getaway for a few days in this charming province.

Meanwhile, children’ holidays, whether in winter (July) or summer (January-February), make this destination high season. A large number of families with children take the opportunity to go on an adventure, so that Jujuy receives a large number of tourists during these days.

WHEN ARE THE HIGH, MIDDLE AND LOW SEASONS?

May, June, July and August are the coldest and driest months of the year. They are perfect for those who enjoy the coolest temperatures, since they are usually between 4 and 22 °C. Rainfall is very scarce during these months, guaranteeing the use of the travel itinerary almost every day.

In general, these months are considered low season, except for holidays and the school break in July (usually during the last 2 weeks of the month), which has become one of the highest seasons of the year.

Meanwhile, January and February are high season, mainly due to school breaks. This will also determine the prices of the services, so if you are looking to save money, they are not the best option.

These months are also the ones with the highest temperatures and most rainfall. Even so, the rains are still relatively scarce compared to other provinces and the climate remains mainly dry, with the exception of the region Yungas where rainfall is usually more intense (at this time of year). Consult more details about the Jujuy Yungas by clicking on this link.

The months of March and April are considered a medium-low season after the decrease in the flow of visitors, excepting holidays. During this time you can find an ideal climate to tour the province, since rainfall is scarce -almost zero- and temperatures drop a lot compared to January or February.

It should be noted that, precisely because of the low influx of tourists, the prices are much more accessible, being able to make the visits more relaxed and without crowds of people.

Something very similar happens with the months of September, October and November (except for holidays). The climate is excellent due to the pleasant temperatures and low rainfall. At the same time, tourism is decreasing and prices are affordable.

For its part, December has similar characteristics to those in recent months, with the difference that the heat and rainfall are a little more noticeable and resemble the months of January and February. The same as an increase in the flow of tourists due to holidays and the beginning of school breaks. For this reason, the last month of the year is considered a medium-high season.

In conclusion, we can say that this province is suitable to visit all year round, with an excellent climate so you can make magnificent excursions in each station. The best seasons to travel to Jujuy are decided by you based on your climate preferences, budget and free time to travel.
