    Not only have the natural landscapes of this province captivated travelers, but the typical food of Jujuy as well, as it represents the rich gastronomy of Argentina and, thus, it has been confirmed by tourists who have already had the pleasure of savoring it. With aboriginal influence, it is a true gift to the palate! 

    The main dishes usually include ingredients such as: corn, potatoes, squash, quinoa and llama, pork and chicken meats. With these basic components many of the local dishes are prepared, standing out the empanadas, tamales, humitas, locro and asado de llama. Most are accompanied by local products, such as: quinoa, potatoes, squash, chili, cumin and paprika. 

    To these, there are a great variety of sweet dishes or desserts. Among them, it is necessary to mention the goat cheeses and quesillos that have as a good companion to honey and artisanal wines. Next, we present the dishes that make up the typical food of Jujuy.

    •         TORTILLAS

    One of the most recognized dishes in Jujuy are tortillas with their variety of fillings: cheese, ham, Calabrian, mushroom, olive, Neapolitan and many more. 

    This delicacy can be tasted in a restaurant or on the street. And, there are vendors who usually install their grills near the markets in Humahuaca and Tilcara and to one side of the plaza in Purmamarca.

    •         LOCRO

    Another of the most important dishes in Jujuy is locro. As is tradition, it is prepared based on corn or wheat with pieces of meat and sausages. At the time of serving, a spicy fry made of onion, tomatoes, paprika and chili peppers is added.

    The locro is usually served with a characteristic dessert of the area. It is goat cheese with honey. Another option is to combine it with sweet potato and quince paste or with another famous regional dessert: syrup of chanar or prickly pear.

    •         TAMALES

    The tamal is a typical Jujuy dish, very similar to humitas, which consists of a corn paste wrapped in the leaves of the cob. The big difference between the tamal and the humita is that the first one is stuffed with jerky type meat, onion and some condiments.     •         HUMITAS

    The humita, as we mentioned when talking about the Tamales, is a corn-based food and is widely consumed in the Andean region. Like tamales, humita is prepared by making a corn paste that, after being enlisted, is wrapped in the leaves of the same ear.

    •         LLAMA MEAT

    Finally, it is very common to find in Jujuy different dishes where Llama Meat is one of the main ingredients. Many restaurants serve lomo, llama stew or schnitzel calls, which can be an excellent opportunity for those who want to try this type of local meat.
