WHAT TO DO AND VISIT IN LA QUEBRADA JUJEÑA?

In the Quebrada de Humahuaca there are 3 main points that you cannot miss:

    •         Purmamarca

Without a doubt, Purmamarca is one of the most picturesque towns in the Quebrada, mainly due to its impressive Cerro Siete Colores, which bears that name thanks to the different pigmentations acquired by the minerals that make up its walls.

It is worth investing time to climb the hill, walk its paths and the streets of the town with its adobe houses; enjoy its artisans and the peace of the locals. In addition to its Church, the main square is another must-see point of interest. There is also the Camino de los Colorados. In this case, it is an excellent option to stay in Purmamarca for at least 1 night.

As for gastronomy, you cannot miss the meat, humita and goat cheese empanadas that they prepare in this town. You can usually buy them at the stalls that surround the main square. Take advantage and consult our article on the typical food of Jujuy.

    •         Tilcara

Tilcara is probably the main tourist center in the region. It offers a large number of attractions, a wide and varied hotel offer and excellent gastronomy. The famous Tilcaran nights have different proposals to enjoy peñas with live folk music.

The town is very pleasant and picturesque to walk around and appreciate the adobe buildings and colonial houses. You can also visit museums and the artisan fair that is located in the main square and very close to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Church. In the surroundings of Tilcara are the famous Pucará Ruins.

The warmth and beauty of Tilcara, along with the nightlife, make this town an excellent option to stay if you are going to visit the Quebrada de Humahuaca, especially in January when there are several celebrations. Know the carnivals of Jujuy.

    •         Humahuaca

This beautiful town, which bears the same name as the Quebrada, is one of the three closest to the border with Bolivia and, consequently, the one with the largest number of inhabitants.

In this picturesque place there are many things to do and visit such as the Carnival Museum and the Independence Monument, which stands out both for its large size and for being in one of the highest parts of Humahuaca.

It is also recommended to visit the central square of the town, where the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Cathedral Church and the Cabildo de Humahuaca are located, which currently works as a museum and in the clock on its tower -every noon- there is a moving image of San Francisco Solano to bless those present.

Humahuaca is another of the most important commercial centers in the region, especially with regard to handicrafts. It is worth walking through its streets to appreciate the buildings that still retain their traditional appearance.

    •         Salinas Grandes

The Salinas Grandes are an unmissable visit for those who visit the Quebrada de Humahuaca, despite not being properly located in this destination. You can get to this salt flat from Purmamarca, since it is located about 126 kilometers from this town. Despite the “little” mileage, it must be borne in mind that due to the curves, ups and downs of the route, the trip can take a long time.

However, it is totally worth it. The landscape is impressive: a huge, incredibly white expanse surrounded by mountains. This originated from the evaporation of a salty lagoon millions of years ago.
