Browse the Beagle Channel, Unskippable with children! It’s a sea passage between Argentina and Chile, whose magic you can combine with the charming fauna of Ushuaia.

Navigating the Beagle Canal is fascinating. It’s a sea crossing that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, allowing us to know some of the islands that make up this important strait: its history, flora and fauna until we reach the famous End of the World Lighthouse. Definitely unskippable with children!
Besides being fantastic, this activity is safe for the little ones of the house and, therefore, ideal to share a family adventure. It requires no effort; the only requirement is to be dazzled by nature! That’s why it’s the most requested excursion in the Fuegian capital.
There are several options for this lake walk, although the most classic and popular is “Isla de Lobos”, as it’s a short but complete and fun excursion. It takes place at any time of the year, with a tour of Bird Island, Isla de los Lobos, Les Eclaireurs lighthouse (better known as the End of the World Lighthouse) and hike on Karelo Island.
It’s important that you know that all boats arranged for this ride have the necessary security measures. The boat awaits us at the Port of Ushuaia where a team of crew members (experts) and their captain welcome us and share some indications for the healthy enjoyment of the activity. Once we are all seated in our stalls, the guided adventure will begin.
ISLA DE LOBOS SAILING WITH CHILDREN
The journey begins with a tour of Ushuaia Bay towards the Beagle Canal. On the boat, we skirt the Island of Birds where you can see the striking and varied flora and fauna of the place: Skúas, Black Eyebrow Albatross, Steam Ducks, Cauquenes, Cooking Seagulls, Grey Seagulls and Magellan cormorants (whose size leads us to confuse them with penguins).
Quite a spectacle for the little ones in the house. The boat approaches the island and shuts down its engine, right on one side, very close to the birds, so that we can hear them, admire them and take pictures of them with the snowy mountains in the background.
Then we visit the Island of Wolves. Its name says it all, it’s home to the sea lions of one and two hairs, so we will be able to observe many of these specimens. Our sense of smell is evident in the place, after the peculiar smell that distills the habitat of these animals… But calm down! Nothing that overshadows the moment. For the children it will be fantastic to be able to have them so close and explore how they live, they are very friendly!
Of course, you won’t stop taking pictures. So don’t forget to charge the batteries of your mobile device to the top and, if possible, carry an extra one. The most expected stop remains to be made, the one that gives us the typical postcard of Ushuaia, the famous photo with the End of the World Lighthouse behind. Besides, kids will know how their flashlight is powered by solar panels.
You’ll think the adventure ends there, but it’s not. In the lighthouse we will also meet luxury animals such as Imperial Cormorants and Rockers, from whom you can also take a nice memory. You will also get to know a little bit about the Monte Cervantes shipwreck in the 1930s.
Once steeped in a bit of history, we continue towards Karelo Island, last destination of the tour where you disembark for a short walk. This activity is optional, so it will all depend on your desire and energies! Although children love the opportunity to explore archaeological remains: Yámanas concheros.
This last activity does not last long, it will take only 15 minutes and has no difficulty because it’s suitable for people of all ages. In winter, it’s subject to the amount of snow or ice.
COMBINE WITH OTHER GREAT EXCURSIONS FOR KIDS
You must take in account that the walk lasts three hours (including the return overlooking the mountain ranges of the Martial), and is done in the afternoon –15:30 hs–, so there is an opportunity to complement this activity with other tourist destinations of Usuhaia where, likewise, you can share as a family.
In this sense, we recommend traveling with children on the End of the World Train. A mythical adventure among natural wonders that you can schedule for the morning and thus complete your day of fun, adventure and family knowledge. Click on the link and get to know more about this magical journey.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NAVIGATING WITH CHILDREN
