ISCHIGUALASTO PROVINCIAL PARK
The Ischigualasto Provincial Park, also known as Valle de la Luna, is the star of San Juan and, of course, a must if you are going to visit this province.
It’s a unique place. Nature has been working on the surfaces of the Moon Valley for more than 200 years, not for nothing was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
However, its importance also lies in the scientific value of the paleontological findings that were made on site. There are several circuits from which you can choose to explore the park. Check out our article on Valley of the Moon and you’ll get more details of the tour for this majestic place in San Juan.
EL LEONCITO NATIONAL PARK
Located in the department of Calingasta, about 30 kilometers from Barreal, it is a beautiful park of almost 90,000 hectares that –after its good condition– is a clear example of the typical communities of the Precordillera Cuyana.
In El Leoncito National Park, historical sites, spaces of archaeological interest and paleontological sites are protected. Furthermore, thanks to the absence of air pollution and weather conditions, it gives us a transparent sky that contributed to the installation of two observatories: El Leoncito CASLEO Astronomical Complex (one of the best equipped centers in the country), and the Dr. Carlos U CESCO Astronomical Observatory.
As if that weren’t enough, if you visit Pampa El Leoncito National Park from Barreal, you can combine with other adventures like Carrovelismo. In the meantime, within the park you have options for many walks:
- Trail “Water Landscapes”: walk of approximately 2000 meters, of little difficulty and with a self-guided path where the importance of water stands out for the life of the region.
- Trekking Cerro El Leoncito: this trail has an average difficulty mainly for the 4 hours of walking that lasts to El Leoncito hill.
- Cascada El Rincón: important waterfall of Arroyo El Leoncito, ideal to cool off or for those who want to rest for a few hours with a very beautiful and peaceful landscape. It can be accessed on foot or by car.

Without a doubt, a key piece to know more about the economic activity of the province and, therefore, one of the must-see excursions in San Juan.
WINDHILL DAM
The Cuesta del Viento and its famous Cuesta del Viento Dique are other places that you cannot miss, especially if you are a lover of outdoor activities and water sports such as Windsurfing. You can know the hydroelectric dam that resembles a mirror of crystal clear water, turquoise color.
This visit is ideal to combine with Pismanta and enjoy its excellent thermal complex with waters known for its healing, therapeutic and rejuvenating properties. That way, you’ll complete a day of activities.
OLIVE ROUTE
Another of the star crops of San Juan are olive oil and table olives.
