The weather in Tucumán varies by areas of its territory

The weather in Tucumán varies by areas of its territory. Seeing it this way, it’s not divided into seasons of the year but into zones; three to be more accurate.

    18 de January, 2021

The first thing to understand the climate in Tucumán is to separate the province into three zones. Temperatures in this place of Argentina don’t vary by seasons of the year, but by geographical area: Sierras Pampeanas, Sierras Sub-Andinas and Llanura Chaqueña. Undoubtedly, Tucumán is small, but very diverse. Let’s see!

WEATHER IN SIERRAS PAMPEANAS DE TUCUMÁN

To get into the matter, we will start with the weather in Sierras Pampeanas de Tucumán. It’s an area comprising the western part of the province, facing south. Here we find Sierras de Aconquija.

There, the climate is arid or semi-arid and temperate, depending on the height. Temperatures are very different, both day and night. The average range from 19°C during summer months and 8°C during winter months. The maximums in summer become very high and in winter the minimums are usually very cold and dry.

Rainfalls are scarce. They’re usually registered in the summer (October to April). Rainfall varies by altitude, orientation and latitude; decreasing from north to south and east to west.

If you are going to travel to the region of Sierras Pampeanas, the best is to do it between autumn and spring to enjoy a more pleasant climate.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN THE TUCUMÁN SUB-ANDEAN MOUNTAINS?

Already in the Sierras Sub-Andinas, northeast of the province, the climate changes to humid subtropical. The main feature of this region is the abundant amount of precipitation. The rainfall accumulated throughout the year is around 1500mm and 2000mm.

To give you a more specific reference, rainfall predominates during summer; between December and March. This region comprises departments such as Trancas and Burruyacú, as well as the very capital of the province, San Miguel de Tucumán.

The average temperature reaches 20°C in summer. Winter, on the other hand, is usually as raw as elsewhere in the Tucuman province, with average temperatures starting from 13°C. This is why, in this region, we can say that we have a pleasant and springy climate most of the year.

Being a mountainous system, consisting of a series of mountain ranges parallel to each other, it becomes possible to find a different weather in this region for the entire province of Tucumán. These mountains intercept wet winds coming from the northeast, and the number of flowing rivers results in the high amount of precipitation.

Snowfalls are scarce. However, cold winters are sporadically frequent. This region has such a good climate that you can visit it all year round, although we recommend that, if possible, you go in summer. That way you’ll avoid precipitation.

THE CLIMATE IN THE CHAQUEÑA PLAIN OF TUCUMÁN

Finally, we have the Chaqueña Plain region, east of Tucumán province, which houses the Cruz Alta and Leales departments.

It has a tropical weather –warm and humid– in summer, with a very marked dry season in winter. Summers are usually excessively hot; winters are mild.

That is, during summer (December-January), the average annual temperature is around 21°C. But the highs can exceed 45°C.

Meanwhile, as winter passes, the famous wind “Pampero” arrives. With this, the temperature drops below 6°C or 7°C. If we keep the values of the average annual temperature (21°C), we won’t notice the extreme temperatures in these seasons.

The low rainfall does not exceed 600 mm per year; rains are summer storms, their intensity decreasing to the west. It’s during June and July when there is less rainfall, compared to the rest of the year.

The Chaqueña Plain is one of the sunniest areas of the region, with about 2500 hours of sunshine a year. In this case, as the temperatures are very high and there is a lot of humidity during summer, we advise to travel in winter or autumn. You’ll enjoy the place more.

    WHAT ABOUT MICROCLIMATES?

To the explained above, we must add the microclimates. Yes! There are cities or places with a different weather from the characteristic of the region to which it belongs that you can tour.

In this, several factors are to be accountable: if the site is crowned with mountain ranges, the difference in atmospheric pressure and the height in meters above sea level will affect the amount of precipitation, which translates in a wetter or warmer, drier or colder place. For example, Villa Nougués (in Lules), located only 45km from San Miguel de Tucumán; or even the microclimate that we can find in Tafí del Valle.
