Planning a trip to Catamarca can be a challenge when it comes to choosing which clothes to wear, given the variety of weather in the province depending on the area, the thermal amplitude and the activities you want to perform. Don’t worry! In this article we share necessary tips for you to assemble your suitcase with the right clothing.

The first thing to consider is which area of Catamarca you are going to travel to. Going to the Shincal isn’t the same as going to the Route of the Seismiles. And it’s the fact that, as we tell you in our note on the Climate in Catamarca, each place has a characteristic temperature regardless of the time!

As an example, the Northeast area (near the provinces of Santiago de Estero and Tucumán), has a fairly warm and humid climate ideal for visiting all year round. So the variants on dressing are minimal between winter and summer.

San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca is one of the cities where you will find that temperature, whatever the time. Fresh clothes are recommended for this area, mainly t-shirts, muscular, dresses, skirts and shorts. However, it is possible that one summer day might be cooler; so it’s not a bad idea to include some light jacket.

If we talk about winter season, you should add some long pants and a thick coat, scarf and shoes with good base (curbs or boots). Temperatures are still warm, but at night it can drop to 0°C. Rains are frequent, so an umbrella is also an essential.

Nevertheless, chances are that when you travel to Catamarca you will visit several places. This province is full of tourist sites that you will surely combine in your itinerary. In that sense, the easiest thing is to choose your clothes according to the time you travel.

HOW TO DRESS FOR A WINTER IN CATAMARCA?

As discussed above, the climate varies between regions throughout several times of the day. We can be 20°C in sunlight and -5°C at nightfall, so we recommend that you bring the following:

Thick coat, waterproof jacket or with padding; consider this the garment you use as the last layer, to keep you warm and isolated from a possible blizzard or drizzle.

T-shirts or thermal T-shirts. In case you go to the area of the Seismiles or Antofagasta de la Sierra, add something fitting for the lower half, preferably thermal.

Some wool, fleece or any material you think is warm.

Gloves, hat, scarf and umbrella or waterproof, especially if you go to high altitude areas.

Thick, non-slip footwear, preferably with rubber sole and good grip. Light footwear is ideal if you plan to hike. It must be waterproof as well.

If you go to the area of Bethlehem, Shincal and San Fernando, we recommend you to bring something light too, just in case! Some T-shirt or jean pants.

    SUMMER TRAVEL CLOTHING IN CATAMARCA

If you travel in summer, it is advisable to wear light clothing such as T-shirts, dresses, shorts and, of course, a swimsuit if you plan to go to the thermal baths of Fiambalá.

However, for the cooler regions of the province you will always have to wear a coat; in this case, use as a guide the suggested clothing for the winter season.

The key to enjoy the trip to these specific destinations is to dress in the ‘onion style’: with several layers of clothing to be removed or added according to the wide climatic variations that take place during the day. So, now you know what clothes to wear to Catamarca for this season.

CLIMATE OF CATAMARCA ACCORDING TO THE AREAS

The climate of Bethlehem and London is very similar to that of San Fernando de Catamarca, although there is usually not as much moisture or rain. So if you are going to visit the Shincal or Tino Gasca, fresh clothes are recommended for summer, always saving that comfy coat for the night.

Winter is also very similar with the sole difference that the cold is drier and there is more wind. At that time we advise you to wear something more protective, thicker and, if possible, wind resistant. This basing on more woolly garments and less t-shirts.

As for areas with Andean climate such as Antofagasta de la Sierra, Fiambalá and the Seismiles region, you should know that the temperature is much cooler in both summer and winter and goes down as you rise in meters above sea level, where some excursions are made.

The weather can go below zero in those destinations, so warm clothes are critical even in summer. In the meantime, in winter, you could find some enclosed places. That’s why is important to consult the operability and availability of the activities.

Take it easy! Our travel advisors will be at your disposal to provide you with all the information you need to know about every corner of the province, helping you to put together your travel itinerary according to the time of year you choose to travel. This way you’ll get the most out of your time and be able to include in your suitcase just what you need. In fact, once you define the places you are going to visit and the activities that you will perform, you will find it easier to decide which clothes to bring to Catamarca.
