There are alternatives by air and by land, including railroad. Look at the pros and cons of each one, it will surely help you define how and where your transfer will be; a fundamental theme for every traveler.
TRAVEL TO TUCUMÁN BY AIR
If we talk about airway, the first thing we have to say is that Tucumán has an airport 9 km east of the capital, San Miguel de Tucumán. It connects the catamaran province with Buenos Aires, Autonomous City, with an average frequency of 8 daily flights; and Cordoba, through 3 weekly flights. In the case of Mendoza and Rosario, the frequency is very similar to that of Cordoba.
Most of these flights operate under the national airline Aerolíneas Argentinas. However, there are also options with Fly Bondi and Jet Samart, whose flights arrive in San Miguel de Tucumán but from El Palomar Airport, which is also located in Buenos Aires but not as used.
Once in San Miguel de Tucumán, if you are not going to stay in the capital and you plan to head to another region of the province, you can go by taxi. The nearest towns are: Lules, Villa Nougues, San Javier or El Cadillal. In case your destinations are further away like Ruins of Quilmes, Amaicha or Tafi del Valle; the best option is to rent a car or travel by bus. It will be a journey of two-three hours.

HOW TO GET TO TUCUMÁN BY LAND
If it’s a land route, there are many route options both national and provincial. It happens that Tucumán is located in the heart of Argentina and, in that sense, it’s relatively simple to get there or combine the paths to the “Garden of the Republic”. We can converge different routes, with the possibility to choose a quick or slow option with stops and lodging where we enjoy the landscape and other wonderful places.
For example, if we come from the Argentine North; we can enter the province by National Route 9 or National Route 34 and its splices. National Route 34 can be considered if we come from the East, taking in Santiago del Estero the Provincial Route 130 that takes us to Tucumán.
From the West, the most beautiful and recommended to take is National Route 40, which makes the entrance through the northeast sector of the Tucuman province, near Amaicha del Valle and the Calchaquíes Summits. This route will show you beautiful places from start to finish.
Still, most people who enter this province do so from the South (entering from Buenos Aires, Córdoba or Rosario). Because of this, the most common routes in good condition are the national routes 9, 38 and 157.
If you don’t want to drive or don’t have your own vehicle, you can get there by bus. There are many that leave daily from Buenos Aires. You can also take one from Rosario, Salta, Neuquén, Bariloche, Santa Rosa, Córdoba and Mendoza.
The companies that offer these routes are: Andesmar, Almirante Brown, Balut Hnos, Chevallier, Gutierrez, Flechabus, General Urquiza, Mercobus, Plusultra, San Juan de Mar del Plata and Transfer Line. The Bus is one of the most recommended means of transport to reach Tucumán, along with the flight. Both allow you to arrive rested and with more energy to start with visits and excursions.
TRAVELLING TO TUCUMÁN BY TRAIN
Another way to get to know the province -which we do not take very much into account when planning the trip- is through the railways. On the present, you can only travel from Buenos Aires or Cordoba. The stretch that joins Buenos Aires (Retiro), with Tucumán crosses Rosario, Sunchales, La Banda and, finally, San Miguel de Tucumán.
This service is quite reliable and comfortable as it has very good cabins, car-dining room, air-conditioned environment and space for people with reduced mobility. If you plan to travel with your family, please note that children under 3 years do not pay for tickets and children from 3 to 12 years old will only pay 50% of the ticket to occupy.
The service, at the moment, is two days a week departing from Retiro: on Wednesdays and Saturdays, making your return the same number of days per week. It’s certainly the most economical option when making the trip, but you should keep in mind that its operation has improved. It has some disadvantages such as the number of stops it makes, the safety on board, the travel time (it’s much slower) and the sporadic frequency.
In short, how you get to Tucumán depends on your expectations as a traveler, your needs and budget.
